Discover the future of construction at The Big 5

With summits, seminars and thousands of construction solutions, The Big 5 is poised to attract the industry’s biggest players. Josine Heijmans, Portfolio Director at dmg events, explains what to expect at this year’s packed show

The Big 5 is back, and it’s packed with the biggest names in the global construction industry. Held at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) from November 26 to 29, this – our 39th edition – will pave the way for new partnerships, boost investments and connect professionals from around the world.

Under the theme, ‘Shaping the future of construction’, it will promote the new technologies and innovative solutions that are quickly reshaping the world of construction. Offering unprecedented opportunities to work faster, more efficiently and more sustainably, technological innovation will provide the solutions to both today’s and tomorrow’s challenges in the built environment.

The Big 5 will also shed light on the rising entrepreneurs who promise to disrupt the construction sector, and on the women who are pushing the industry forward.

Industry players who embrace this innovation, particularly in a sector widely considered a late technology adopter, can go a long way in building success and staying on top in an extremely competitive market.

Live innovation

We’re proud to say that The Big 5, which is the biggest and most influential construction event in the Middle East, will promote state-of-the-art solutions across all stages of the construction lifecycle. Visitors can learn about these through an exciting array of new show features.

These include the first FutureTech Construction Summit, on November 26. The conference is dedicated to exploring future trends and technologies through case studies, panel discussions and thought-provoking presentations. Under the theme ‘Empowering Innovation in the Construction Ecosystem’, the summit will unveil how construction industry professionals can achieve higher productivity, greater sustainability and enhanced affordability in their projects with the help of technology.

We will also present a dedicated Live Innovation Zone, which will bring together the brightest ideas, minds and initiatives from around the globe. Visitors can discover new products and solutions presented at interactive demonstrations. A display of the most innovative products on show at The Big 5 will also offer a glimpse of what’s helping to shape the industry today.

In addition, The Big 5 Start-up City will gather the next generation of construction tech disruptors, a selection of rising stars that will help to revolutionise the field. To support these entrepreneurs, we will offer a prize worth $25,000 to the most innovative start-up, which will be selected by a panel of judges through an exciting competition.

Women in construction

In another first, we will launch The Big 5’s Women in Construction Seminar & Awards. Gender equality is a hot topic globally, and this seminar will look at the challenges – and successes – that the construction industry is experiencing in this regard.

Construction has traditionally been considered a man’s work, and The Big 5 2018 is providing a platform for women who have smashed this stereotype to share their experiences in order for other females to follow suit. But the Women in Construction Seminar is also a forum for frank discussions on the many areas where the sector is still falling short on gender diversity and inclusion.

The Women in Construction Seminar is one of more than 100 educational sessions that will be held during The Big 5 2018. Free to attend and CPD-certified workshops will run at The Big 5 as Architecture Talks, project Management Talks, BIM Talks and Design talks. Some of the topics to be tackled include retrofitting existing buildings, dealing with the problem of non-payment, the role of machine learning in the construction industry, and producing energy from indoor lighting using decorative solar panels. The sessions will be delivered by local, regional and international experts pioneering the construction industry.

For those new to the region, we also have a valuable ‘How to Do Business in the UAE’ Seminar in partnership with Dubai South Business Park on November 28. This will include a presentation by Expo 2020, which will be hosted by Dubai between October 2020 and April 2021. It is the first time the World Expo will come to the Middle East and everyone wants to know how they can get involved. We have the answers for you. Last year alone, Expo 2020 organisers awarded $3bn worth of construction contracts related to the event, and a further $112m i n non-construction awards.

Global meeting place

Covering an area the size of 16 football fields, one next to the other, The Big 5 will showcase thousands of construction products and solutions from around the globe. Over 2,500 construction companies will take part in the exhibition, clustered in five dedicated sectors: MEP services, Building Interiors & Finishes, Building Envelope & Special Construction, Construction Tools & Building Materials, and Construction Technology & Innovation.

The Big 5 Solar, the Urban Design & Landscaping Expo, HVACR Expo, Middle East Concrete and The Big 5 Heavy will run as part of The Big 5 this year, creating one mega construction event at DWTC. For those in the industry, this is one event you can’t afford to miss.
