Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) welcomed a remarkable 140,000 fans to live events and concerts in the first quarter of 2013, kicking off the year on a promising note for music and entertainment fans across the region. Building on the strong momentum of 2012, DWTC hosted 12 world-class events in the first three months of the year, including Cirque du Soleil Dralion, the largest and most exciting acrobatic show series in the world, legendary Egyptian composer and pianist, Omar Khairat, and Spanish sensation, singer and song writer, Julio Iglesias.
January was an exciting month for classical music lovers as fans were able to enjoy one of the most symphonic concerts of the season. Award-winning composer and pianist, Omar Khairat, serenaded a sellout crowd of 4,600 fans as he performed a fascinating repertoire, bridging eastern and western approaches to music by bringing a western harmonic flair to classical Arabic music. Indian ghazal maestro, Pankaj Udhas, also serenaded his fans with a medley of old and new ghazals, as well as debut songs from his new album Dastkhat.
World famous Canadian entertainment company, Cirque du Soleil took to the stage in February with its East acrobatic arts inspired show Dralion. Held over a duration of 13 days and 26 shows, over 95,000 fans were captivated by an awe-inspiring mix of circus arts and street entertainment, as the show's multi-talented performers presented a variety of high-calibre acts including: Trampo-wall, Medusa (contortion), hoop diving, bamboo poles, juggling, single hand balancing, gravity-defying aerial hoop and silk acts, skipping ropes and more. Dralion debuted in the region for the first time in an arena, following Alegria in 2009 and Quidam in 2007, both of which were held under a Big Top. DWTC’s multipurpose Trade Centre Arena served as the ideal venue for this event, boasting 9,100 sqm of space and a 14 meter high ceiling, ensuring the show was a majestic spectacle for all.
Golden Cage Events and Promotion’s Global Fighting Championship 1 took place in early March, featuring leading fighters from all over the world, and showcasing thrilling martial arts for the 1,200 spectators. Also, Latin heartthrob and multi-platinum singer, Julio Iglesias performed for 4,000 fans as part of the “World Legends” concert series. Following his last visit to Dubai 40 years ago, the star enthralled audiences, some of whom had flown over from other parts of the world, with stellar renditions of some of the most beautiful love songs ever written.
DWTC also hosted events for the UAE’s various communities. Catering to fans from the sub-continent, DWTC hosted Star Oasis 2013, celebrating 100 years of Indian Cinema with leading Tamil film stars; Nirvana 2013 featuring tabla maestro Zakhir Hussain; and Bollywood Rocks, an event that saw live performances from heavyweights in the Indian music industry, including Sunidhi Chauhan and Shankar Ehsaan Loy. For Iranian music lovers, a series of Norooz concerts were hosted at DWTC to celebrate the Iranian New Year with classics from the Iranian music industry. These concerts welcomed a significant 10,000 fans.
“We are proud to uphold the significant results of last year in attracting and entertaining avid music and entertainment fans across the region,” said Issam Kazim, Commercial Director, Dubai World Trade Centre. “The record breaking number of guests in the first quarter of 2013 underpins our increased efforts and investment in hosting the biggest entertainment events featuring world renowned international and regional artists. The line-up of live events for the rest of the year is equally as promising, as American comedian Eddie Griffin, who was recently named one of the top 100 greatest stand-ups of all time by Comedy Central will also hold his first ever Middle East performance at DWTC on April 12. Also, Swan Lake, the classic ballet performed by the Royal Moscow Ballet will take place from May 9 – 13.
