Fun for Foodies! Dubai Food Carnival Debuts in February

​The first Dubai Food Carnival, a two-day, family-friendly food and beverage extravaganza organised by Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) – which is also home to Gulfood, the world’s largest annual food and hospitality event – will be held under the banner ‘Fun, Flair & Flavours’ debuting at Dubai Festival City from 21-22 February, 2014.   

A celebration of food, fun and entertainment, the Dubai Food Carnival will kick-start the inaugural Dubai Food Festival - a 23-day, city-wide, gourmet-themed celebration designed to enhance Dubai’s position as the region’s gastronomy capital.

A hugely-anticipated gastronomy social event, the Dubai Food Carnival will feature celebrity chefs conducting educational culinary masterclasses and workshops, dozens of enticing food pavilions, mouth-watering food tastings, and a multi-cultural feast of music. Additionally, comedy and family-themed competitions will play out to tens of thousands of visitors on a blockbuster 360° stage.

“The Dubai public loves its food and the emirate is home to a vibrant culinary scene where a combination of local and international food outlets and celebrity chef restaurants offer an amazing array of choice to residents and visitors alike,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President, Exhibitions & Events Department, DWTC. 

“The Dubai Food Carnival, a dedicated consumer extravaganza where established restaurants and new-to-market operators can engage their target audience, has been designed to satisfy local and regional demand for a culturally-rich, multinational entertainment proposition pinned on the universal appetite for all things culinary. The sheer diversity across this new, value-added offering represents the ultimate food weekend for operators and consumers.”

With Manal Al Alem, a regional chef dubbed the ‘Queen of the Arabic kitchen’, Chef Silvena Rowe, star of BBC food show, Country Show Cook-Off, and the new season of Chopped, the hit cooking competition programme, and Chef John Torode, the straight-talking co-host and judge of BBC food shows MasterChef, Celebrity MasterChef and Junior MasterChef, providing a sprinkling of star power, four additional cuisine artisans will join the famous trio for a head-to-head ‘cook-off’ in The Chef’s Dome - a dedicated, live cooking demonstrations area.

The Carnival’s central stage will host multicultural performances by a troupe of Brazilian Capoeira dancers, Japanese Basho Championship sumo wrestlers, including three-time world champion, Nara, and one of the region’s leading bilingual comedy acts, Ali Al Sayed.

Additionally, Mina Liccione, star of Broadway hit, STOMP, will perform Matbakh – Kitchen Rhythm, an energetic stage spectacle where ‘Dubai’s ‘First Lady of Comedy’ uses everyday kitchen utensils to create a stunning percussion soundtrack.

Other events include the Great Yalla BBQ, an open BBQ competition sponsored by Weber and the MLA and featuring members of the public in a head-to-head challenge on 21 February before a Grand Final on 22 February, The Extreme Food Challenge, a marathon chili-eating competition, and My Dad Can Cook in association with 7 Days newspaper, a week-long cooking competition with its Grand Final on 22 February.

With major hotels such as Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek, already in on the act, a host of local and international food and beverage outlets are also signing up. Exhibitors range from international mega chains such as Pizza Express - which now boasts in excess of 400 restaurants in the UK and more than 40 across Europe, Hong Kong, India and the Middle East – to boutique, home-grown franchises such as Chinese Connection, an Asian restaurant in Dubai Internet City, and Mandilicious, the Dubai-based specialists of traditional Arabian cuisine served with a modern touch.

Open from 10am to 11pm on 21-22 February, tickets to the Dubai Food Carnival are AED60 (US $ 16) per person. Children under 12 enter free.
