The most populous and second largest of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, Dubai is recognized internationally as the vibrant heart of the Middle East. With barely 6% of its economic output generated by oil, Dubai has been wisely investing in a future distinctly different from its neighbours in the Gulf Cooperative Council, replacing hydrocarbons with services and expanding to become the commercial hub of the region.

The official language is Arabic, but given the large expatriate population, English is commonly used in business communication. Over 150 nationalities have made this city their melting pot, and in 2008 the census count reached 2.3 million with nearly 80% foreign nationals.
